Global Alliance for Elimination of Lymphatic
Filariasis
(GAELF) in
India
Preface
India, the largest democracy in
the world, has an impressive public health
structure that promises to provide universal
health care. Ironically, India also has one of
the lowest health budgets in the world. The
gross mismatch between the objectives and
resources made available is at the heart of both
the inadequacies and inequities of the Indian
health system.
International financial organisations and
powerful international agencies are increasingly
dictating India’s development policies, plans
and programmes. The role of the former in
particular has resulted in growing inequalities
in health, as more and more external assistance
is being channeled through centrally sponsored
programmes for communicable diseases and family
welfare.
It is in this context that this study on Global
Alliance for the Elimination of Lymphatic
Filariasis as one of the Global Health-related
Public-Private Partnerships in India, and
especially in the State of Tamilnadu, has been
undertaken by PREPARE/TEST FOUNDATION. PREPARE
and TEST FOUNDATION thank Wemos for the
encouragement and support provided to our study
on the Global Alliance for the Elimination of
Lymphatic Filariasis. Dr. Jose Utrera and his
team in particular worked along with us,
visiting us, providing insights and making
available relevant materials.
